UPDATED 04/06/2025: Ovechkin has hit #895! in the second period of today's game on Long Island Alex The Gr8 has made history. Breaking a record that has stood since 1994. Congratulations to ALex Ovechkin!
He did it! Alex Ovechkin has tied Wayne Gretzky with 894 lifetime goals a record that has stood since 1999, last broken broken by Gretzky in 1994 when he passed Gordie Howes’ 801. Everyone has a record they are so sure will never be touched; however, this one feels different. Even in 2005 when Ovechkin and Sid “the kid” Crosby were drafted, most fans were sure of two things. The aforementioned pair will change the game, but they still won’t touch Gretzky. With that said, most fans were wrong. Ovi has done it and tomorrow on Long Island we may see him break it with 895 career goals. How long will that record stand. Will names like McDavid or Bedard be in the conversation? Not only is this achievement a testament to skill, but it also speaks to Ovi’s resiliency. He has played 1486 games since joining the league, one game fewer than it took Gretzky to hit the same goal mark. Conversely Sidney Crosby has only played 1346, a 140-game difference, that’s 1.7 seasons fewer over the same 20-year career. Sure his 622 goals are significantly fewer, but he is the next closest active player and had as much if not more promising potential on draft day.
What record is currently in the books that you don’t think will ever be beat? For me, its Martin Brodeur’s career win record, 691 wins over 1266 games.
